DEASSEMBLING AND ASSEMBLING THE SHINAI:
Removing the shipping snairs - dont damage the bamboo with sharp edge. Dont damage leather parts or the long cord [tsuru]. You can remove snairs by opening the knots with nails.
Find the tip of the cord under leather parts.
You can use the hand guard under the cord to make it easier to roll the cord.
Take out sakigawa. | ||
Put the sakigomu to safe.
Take out tsukagawa while holding slits together. Handle might be tight.
Take slits in parts in to an order to a stand. You can use a folio under so you wont stain with the oil.
Mark the slit order inside the handle with numbers 1,2,3,4... Dont loose metal plate(inside green circle of the picture). Dont put oil to the handle, so the leather of handle wont spoil. Do the same for all 4 slits.
Dont carve to red direction. Scrape to green direction according to blade using shinai scraper or shinai knife. Moist the bamboo and scrape loose parts. Remember to scrape all sharp edges of a new shinai, which will start to brake easily when scracthing eachother.
Put the shinai together in same order.
You can turn the best slits downward.
Put on tsukagawa. | ||
With rubber glove it is easy - you mights need adult help with this. You can hold the shinai between your legs when you kneel (use carton roll to prevent oil and keep the slits together) and by hanging and pulling downward put the handle on.
You can put the cord under the sakigawa and the leather wont tear. But the cord is more easy to wear of from the hits. Cord goes over at the picture.
In to the knot, around the cord, and again in to the knot.
Tighten and hide the tip inside sakigawa.
Put the nakayui. 1/4 from tip of the hole shinai.
Hold your thumb on the cord, so it wont loose tension. Dont put overtension, so that the shinai will bend and crack easily. Tsuru should be in tension that the tip of the sword wont come out. Right tension is when the sound starts hearing when you play with tsuru. If the sound is high there is too much of tension.
Roll cord about 7 times.
And ones around vertical cord.
Put the tip under with unsharp object.
Put the hairy side up. Shiny side will brake easily.
Do not put too much tension to nakayui so it might brake while hitting and cause serious danger.
Cut extra long nagayui and leave 1cm tip. |
